You never interview a single shopper. You read thousands of till receipts and look for pairs of items that keep turning up in the same basket.
The question is always the same shape: when customers buy peanut butter, what else do they buy? The answer changes shelf layout, promotions and bundle deals, and it comes out of three numbers.
