Where it comes from
Gravity modelA very popular econometric model in international trade. Its name comes from using the gravitational force concept as an analogy to explain the volume of bilateral trade flows.
Origins with Tinbergen (1962), and thousands of published articles and working papers since. Leamer and Levinsohn (1995) called its results "some of the clearest and most robust findings in empirical economics".
Initially it was not based on a theoretical model, only on intuition. A range of rigorous theoretical foundations came later.
