A shopkeeper cuts his prices
A shopkeeper cuts every price by ten per cent to sell more. Whether he ends the week richer depends on one thing: did enough extra customers arrive to make up for the lower price on each sale?
If customers barely notice, he sells the same amount for less money and is poorer.
A country that lets its currency fall is doing exactly this. Its exports get cheaper to foreigners, its imports dearer to itself. Whether the trade balance improves depends on whether the quantities move enough. That question has a name and a number, and they are the whole of this chapter.
