The two Acts that give the RBI its powers
The statutory base is short and worth quoting.
The Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934Governs the Reserve Bank's own functions.
The Banking Regulation Act, 1949Governs the financial sector.
Together they give the Reserve Bank wide-ranging powers to issue directions to the banking and financial sectors. Two more that matter for this course: the Public Debt Act 1944 for the government debt market and FEMA 1999 for foreign exchange.
