Annual holding cost

Annual holding cost = (Q / 2) x H

Whenever stock runs down evenly from Q to zero. Q/2 is the average inventory over the cycle.

Annual ordering cost

Annual ordering cost = (D / Q) x S

D/Q is the number of orders placed a year. Ordering cost never depends on how big each order is.

The six types

  1. Raw materials and purchased parts
  2. Work-in-process (WIP)
  3. Finished goods inventories, or merchandise
  4. Tools and supplies
  5. Maintenance and repairs (MRO) inventory
  6. Goods-in-transit to warehouses or customers, called pipeline inventory

Pipeline inventory is the one students forget. It is owned, it is paid for, and it is sitting in a lorry.
