The three questions before the visual

Camm's rule is to define the goal before choosing a chart. In Power BI that means three questions.

  1. What kind is each variable? Categorical or quantitative, and if categorical, how many levels. If quantitative, is it a total (additive) or a rate (not additive)?
  2. Is anything ordered? Time, and any ordinal category, so the axis order is not yours to choose.
  3. What is the question? Compare, show a trend, show a distribution, show a relationship, show a share, or read exact values.

The visual follows from the answers, not from the gallery.
